When we were young, did anyone fall in love with robots? Yes, I fell in love with them when I was 6. So this is the second question, Have you ever tried to draw them? My answer is yes too. Today, I usually drawing them as a passion. I have to say that I'm not an artist or anyone concerns to designer or industry game/anime/movie. I'm an material engineer. But now, I decided to become an artist.
So let's start with the main problem. What things do we need to design a mecha/robot?
For me, the first thing is love. Do you love drawing, drawing mecha ... ? The happiness when you do something you really love is the most important thing. If you're boring, you artwork is suck. We can't make a good artwork with the bad mood.
So, why we love mecha? Because these giant robots are so cool. When I was young, I wished that one day I will drive a robot and save the world. Other people may think that we're insane but don't mind. On our bed, we imagined that a giant robot walk on the road. That's great!
Next, the second thing is inspiration, the main part of this chapter. Of course, our biggest inspiration is movie,cartoon and anime. Today,I'll list my inspiration to draw a mecha.
Power rangers
The most interested thing in Power Ranger series is Megazord ( but in the recent seasons the megazords are really suck). What can we learn form these series? First, it's human-like giant robot. This is the basic form of mecha ( we will talk about this topic in chapter 2). Second, it's the transformation. This part is very important when you design a fighter-like mecha which can transform to human-like mecha.
About the content of this series, it's about a group of kids have super power and wear some strange suit to bully a monster each episode. After destroying the tiny monster, the giant monster appears and the rangers call their megazord and continue bullying.
Mobile Suit Gundam
A super cool mecha anime. With a unique design, mainly human-like mecha, MS Gundam is an excellent inspiration for anyone who want to draw mecha. The design of Gundams is really good (sometime this anime has some dumbass Gundams). What can we learn from this? I have to say that you can learn almost things that you need to design a mecha. A standard human-like form, head look like a spartan or samurai, we also have hand with armor, the joints of Gundam is really detail. We also head cool gear and armor such as: wings, beam saber, rifle, booster, core fighter ...
The content of this anime is very good, deep and humanity.It's mainly about the war between Earth and space and one day, people will understand together (this content is inspired by some kind of people in the anime such as coordinator, new type, innovator). This one indicate that fighting isn't human's nature.
Transformer
For me, the image of these movies are excellent with many technology tools. It's very hard to design a Transformer with too many details. If you like artifice, these series will satisfy you but I don't think they have an excellent content. But after all, these movies are really good for everybody who love mecha.
Pacific Rim
This one is good to learn how to design a robot. All of the design and the content are classic: Goverment create giant robots to destroy the monster and save the Earth. That's all. The important thing that you need to watch this is there were many kind of robot and many cool action scene with modern weapon. I don't rate high grade for the content but the artifice is really good.
Valvrave: The liberator
This is the final Anime in this list. About the design, I really love this special design. You can't find anywhere a concept like a Valvrave. There are all elements in Valvrave: cool design, special energy, special skill, super power. Could you image a robot can make harakiri? That's too cool. It also has a multi-leg model, multi-hand model and a butterfle-like model. What a creative anime !
The content is an important element that make you have to watch this anime. It's very mysterious ant the beginning, it's about a unknown technology, and the rest part is about the secret of the world, how people sacrify themself to protect their friend, their family and how selfish the adults were to get their purpose. For me, this is an excellent mecha anime.
